As a child, Alex grew up building miniature model yachts and racing them at the Central Park Model Yacht club.  In the mid 90’s Alex transitioned from crafting miniature boats to building his very own life-size rendition of an 1882 fishing boat. Aboard the “Promised Land” he spent many summers exploring the coast of Long Island, often sailing for long periods on his own. The “Promised Land” would become a central character in a series of short films Alex made with friends about the adventures of a band of marauding pirates and mermaids. The mermaid earrings were created in order to complete the elaborate mermaid costumes worn by his friends in the movie. While most of the original footage has been lost to the passage of time, the mermaid earrings remain with us as a beautifully unconventional design.
